Malaysia’s Feb’12 IPI up 7.5%

Malaysia's Industrial Production Index (IPI) in February 2012 climbed 7.5% compared with the same month in 2011, according to the latest statistical release by the Department of Statistics (DOS).


The IPI for January 2011 was a revised positive 0.3% year-on-year. Compared with the preceding month on a seasonally-adjusted basis, the IPI in February 2012 rose 9.1%.

The increase in IPI in February 2012 year-on-year was due to a 9.4% increase in the manufacturing index, a 1.9% rise in the mining index and a 11.3% increase in the electricity index.

The higher manufacturing output in February 2012 compared with the corresponding month in 2011 was mainly due to higher production in three industries- Petroleum, Chemical, Rubber and Plastic Products (8.9%); Radio, Television and Communication Equipment and Apparatus (11.3%) and Food Products, Beverages and Tobacco (12.7%).

The seasonally adjusted manufacturing output for February 2012 was 11.0% higher compared with the month before.

The mining output in February 2012 edged up 1.9% compared with the same month in 2011 due to a 2.4% increase in the production of crude oil and a 2.8% increase in the production of natural gas.

On a seasonally-adjusted month-on-month basis, the mining output for February 2012 was 5.1% higher.

The electricity output in February 2012 was up 11.7% compared with the corresponding month in 2011.

On a seasonally-adjusted basis, the electricity output in February 2012 increased by 8.5% compared with January 2012.
