The National Key Economic Area (NKEA) on Communications, Content and Infrastructure (CCI) sector, which covers a wide scope of activities including content, network applications, services and devices, is a crucial area for development towards a high-income economy.
The NKEA with 10 Entry Point Projects (EPPs) are expected to increase the sector's contribution to gross national income (GNI) to RM57.7 billion by 2020.
The Entry Point Projects (EPPs) in the CCI NKEA are expected to drive further growth in communications services, moving from a focus on infrastructure and access to applications and content.
Emphasis will be on building up Malaysia's value-add in advanced services, especially content creation as well as distribution and broadcasting with the aim of turning Malaysia into a regional centre for digital content. So far, 35.702 hours of Malaysian content have been digitised to preserve the country's national heritage.
An EPP on Track and Trace has been added to encourage the use of Radio Frequency Identification Technology or RFID in security application and trade facilitation.
The RFID is currently also being used by some 60% of birds' nest houses and processing facilities under the Swiftlet Nest Online Traceability System for added security to validate the authenticity of birds’nests from Malaysia.
Another focused area for the country's move towards a knowledge-based economy is on three main segments- setting up e-Learning for students and professional training, launch of e-Healthcare and increasing the application of CCI technology for government services to the people as well as for trade facilitation.
Going forward, Malaysia will leverage on next generation infrastructure opportunities focusing on coverage, affordability and quality of access to the public to spur growth and development towards a high-income nation-status.
